Carbon Clear

At The King’s Ferry, we’re proud to announce that we are the first international coach company to become carbon neutral. We’ve reduced our carbon emissions, ensuring that we operate an environmentally efficient coach transport service.

And, because we’ve worked so hard to achieve this, any journeys you make with us will be carbon neutral too.

So what does carbon neutral mean for Kings Ferry? Our work with carbon management specialists Carbon Clear has already enabled us to:

  • improve our current environmental performance
  • plan a further 25% reduction in emissions by 2012
  • offset our remaining emissions
  • significantly reduce our ecological footprint.

Carbon Clear’s initial assessment of our carbon footprint has enabled us to developed an ongoing programme to reduce all emissions. It also helped us to improve our CO² engine emissions from Euro level 1 to Euro level 3, and it is anticipated that level 5 will be achieved by 2012, further reducing our emissions by 25%.
(Note: To encourage a reduction in vehicle emissions, the European Union has developed the Euro levels assessment scheme. The standards apply to all vehicles, both private and commercial. Euro 1 vehicles create the most emissions, while those at level 5 create the least. All newly purchased Kings Ferry coaches operate at Euro level 4.)

Our modern, well-maintained fleet already has one of the lowest levels of carbon emissions within the UK coach industry, but we understand the importance of reducing our carbon footprint further still. More importantly, CO² emissions, calculated in kilograms per passenger per journey, show that coach travel is already one of the most environmentally friendly modes of transport currently available. Statistics taken from the Department for Transport/National Atmospheric Emission Inventory 2004, reflect this claim.

CO2 emissions in kilogrammes per passenger per journey
Mode of transport London to Edinburgh London to Bristol
Plane 96.4 N/A
Car* 71.0 21.3
Rail 11.9** 10.6***
Coach 9.2 3.3

Assumes 1.56 people per car. ** Modern high speed electric train. *** Modern diesel train.

As part of the overall project we are also investing in projects to improve living standards in developing countries and contributing to global climate initiatives including re-forestation schemes and bio-fuel development.

To celebrate this new carbon neutral status, three Kings Ferry coaches now feature a thought-provoking carbon neutral livery, while all others will carry smaller carbon neutral branding.
