Nigel Skill is told to ‘get on his bike’ by the Lord Mayor of Nottingham, Councillor Jeannie Packer

The Lord Mayor of Nottingham, Councillor Jeannie Packer, has set Nigel Skill, the 55 year old Nottingham coach company boss, off on his 14 day Land’s End to John O’Groats cycling marathon.  He aims to raise £9,000 for Maggie’s, the Nottingham Evening Post’s charity for 2009.

The Lord Mayor, the first user of the donated civic bicycle on which she launched the ‘Wheelie Big Breakfast’ says, “Good luck, but I won’t be offering any insight into the route.”

Nigel Skill says he has been advised by the Cyclists’ Touring Club and with minor detours to meet Maggie’s staff at UK centres and Skills’holidaymakers in the Lake District, he intends to stick to their tried and tested route. “Surprisingly the worst bit seems to be right at the start getting out of Devon and crossing Cornwall,” he says. “After that there are very few steep testers until we reach the Highlands and by then I’ll be either fighting fit or failing fast,” he says. “I’m indebted to everyone who has offered sponsorship already, and I look forward to the challenge with great anticipation.”
