Celebrating Edinburgh Military Tattoo’s Diamond Jubilee

Come and watch the spectacular, 60th Royal Military Tattoo which takes place between 6th and 28th August 2010. See an exciting array of performers from four different continents perform against the stunning backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. Feast your eyes on the magnificent displays of colours, performance display teams and dancing; and your ears on the unforgettable melodies of song, Massed Military Bands, and of course the haunting sounds of the ‘Lone Piper;’ and so, much more.

Originally encountered by the British Army, when stationed in Flanders during, “The War of the Austrian Succession.” The term Tattoo is originally derived from the Dutch words “Doe den tap toe” which roughly translates into “close or turn off the tap.” A bit like last orders at the pub.

The “tap toe” (pronounced tattoo) custom was then taken up by the British and was played by a regiment’s Corps of Drums each night, to signal tavern owners to “turn off the beer tap” so that the troops could return to their lodgings in time for bed. More recently the Tattoo became not only a last duty call of the day but also a ceremonial form of entertainment performed by Military Musicians.

Come rain or shine the Tattoo is performed every evening on a weekday, and twice on a Saturday, through the month of August and has never been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. You can expect to see Saturday night’s second performance highlighted by impressive fireworks display along with the pyrotechnics display that accompanies every night’s performance. The diamond anniversary of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo promises to be the best one yet. You can enjoy this Military spectacular with:
