The upcoming Royal Wedding could deliver a major boost to tourism and the British economy, according to VisitBritain chief executive Sandie Dawe.
She said the marriage of Prince William to Kate Middleton in April 2011 could easily be the biggest broadcast event in history – with predictions that four billion people could be watching. Coverage of the wedding will give Britain a golden opportunity to demonstrate the strength of its history and tradition, but also how that story is being brought up to date by a very modern Royal couple.
Sandie explains: “The Royal Wedding is set to deliver a welcome boost not just to the tourism industry in London but across Britain. It will give VisitBritain a wonderful opportunity to showcase Britain in the lead up to the 2012 games.”
A VisitBritain study has also revealed the event is set to boost tourism from the fastest growing nations in the world. The research shows the rapidly expanding BRIC nations – Brazil, Russia, India and China – are amongst the keenest to visit British places connected to the Royal Family.
The number of visitors to Britain from the emerging nations was already set to take off. The announcement of the marriage – and the enormous publicity that has resulted around the world – now looks likely to accelerate the trend. The evidence comes from the Anholt-GMI Nations Brand index survey of 25,000 potential foreign visitors, which assessed the appeal of countries as if they were commercial brands.
The survey asked how likely they were to visit places associated with the Royal Family and results show the nations who were keenest on the idea were Russia, where 83% of respondents said they would go to Royal sites, followed by Brazil on 79%.
Sandie added: “This fascinating research shows that people from some of the fastest growing economies in the world are amongst the most enthusiastic about visiting Britain, and the sites associated with the Royal Family. The announcement of a Royal Wedding has already generated a huge amount of publicity worldwide. This can only enhance the promising indications we have received that tourism to Britain from the BRIC countries and others is about to take off.”
