Father’s Day!

In the early 20th century to recognize the role fathers also play and to compliment Mother’s Day, Father’s Day was introduced.  Father’s Day was celebrated to reflect the paternal bonds gained between father and child and also to honour and commemorate our forefathers.

Long before any modern observances, a young Babylonian named Elmesu wished his father good health and a long life on a clay tablet.

Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, after listening to a church sermon in 1909  about the newly recognized Mother’s Day felt  strongly that fatherhood needed to be recognized as well, as her own father William Smart, a civil War Veteran  was left to raise his family alone, when his wife died giving birth to their 6th child when Sonora was just 16 years old.

Father’s Day celebrations is on the 3rd Sunday of June, therefore the date of the occasion is never fixed.  This year it falls on 19th June and is one of the most meaningful days for those who have fathers or for those who are fathers themselves.

Gift giving and special dinners to fathers are some of the many acts undertaken along with family-oriented activities.  Younger children often give Dad a handmade gift and the smiles and shared bond between the two become a loving memory.

Father’s Day will be here before you know it and finding the perfect gift for your Dad can be a daunting prospect. They need to know how much you appreciate them for all they do.
