Page & Moy name to be axed after 2012

Page & Moy Travel Group is to close the 50 year old Page & Moy brand as the company attempts to return to profit.

The group announced that it will close Page & Moy as a tour operator from 2013 to concentrate on its other two brands – escorted tours specialist Travelsphere and singles operator Just You.

Chief executive Ian Smith insisted that the company was “an excellent business” but needed a new strategy to bring it back into profit. The holding company will retain the Page & Moy name.

Smith said the decision to close Page & Moy was made because the company wanted to focus on one escorted touring brand and that would be Travelsphere, which only began selling through the trade last year.

“Since we take away three times as many people on holiday with Travelsphere it was a logical step to offer all our customers holidays with this portfolio in the future” Smith said.

“This isn’t a decision we’ve taken lightly and we’ve spent a lot of time listening to our Page & Moy customers, and I’m happy to say that in many cases they are also Travelsphere customers.”

All three of the company’s brands will continue to operate separately in 2012 with a final branded Page & Moy holiday collection brochure released next month including all land, river and rail tours. But Page & Moy will not be remarketed as a brand for 2013 holidays onwards.

Smith stressed the importance of agents in the company’s future and said the trade should benefit from a smaller range of brochures.

“We want to develop our trade business and we have also had great feedback from agents,” he added.

Page & Moy celebrated its 50th anniversary this year, having taken its first escorted tour with 23 customers to the Le Mans 24 hour motor race in France in 1961.

Smith, who was formerly managing director to Lunn Poly, became Page & Moy chief executive in June, replacing William Burton.
